Amnesty International Warns of Escalating Israeli Violations Against Palestinians Ahead of Elections

Amnesty International's global research director says Israeli election rhetoric targeting Palestinians may lead to more international law violations.

Israeli voters are being exposed to anti-Palestinian rhetoric and threats of escalated violations for political gain as the country prepares for elections, Amnesty International's director of global research, advocacy and policy said.

Erika Rosas highlighted the continued demonization of Palestinians during election campaigns, with pledges to expand occupation in the West Bank and intensify destruction in Gaza, which has faced three years of war, the Palestinian News and Information Agency (WAFA) reported.

The Israeli government continues to forcibly displace Palestinians in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and Palestinians are still being killed in Gaza despite a ceasefire over a year ago. The expansion of restricted-access areas and postponement of reconstruction efforts have further exacerbated the situation. In Gaza, people are waiting in long queues for aid due to restrictions on commercial goods, and a ban on motor oil is worsening the health sector.

Rosas stressed that millions of people in Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria will be affected by Israel's elections, despite having no right to vote. She called on influential countries to pressure Israel's next government using diplomatic and economic tools, including suspending the EU-Israel Association Agreement and imposing an arms embargo.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been a longstanding issue, with Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories and its policies towards Palestinians being widely criticized by human rights organizations and the international community. The conflict has resulted in significant humanitarian crises, including the situation in Gaza, which has faced repeated wars and a blockade.
