Canada Introduces Immigration Rule Changes Favoring High-Earning Foreign Workers
Canada will give high-earning foreign workers an edge in obtaining permanent resident status through changes to the Express Entry system, theglobeandmail.com reported.
Canada has announced changes to its Express Entry system, which will prioritize high-earning foreign workers in certain occupations, theglobeandmail.com has reported.
The new rules will award additional points to candidates with eligible Canadian work experience or a qualifying job offer in a high-wage occupation. Eligible occupations include engineers, surgeons, electricians, and senior managers in business, health, and construction
The changes aim to refocus the economic immigration system on growth rather than non-economic factors. During the pandemic, Canada shifted its focus to bringing in low-skilled workers, which led to a decline in the country's real GDP per capita. The new rules, along with recent reductions in temporary workers, are seen as a step towards fixing this reversal.
Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab is expected to release Canada's next immigration levels plan soon. The plan should be based on careful analysis and consultation with provinces to balance the benefits of immigration with the country's capacity to absorb newcomers.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has emphasized the importance of getting immigration right, particularly in its impact on Canada's relationship with the provinces. Further reforms are needed to bring stability and credibility back to the system.
Historically, Canada focused on bringing in high-skilled workers, but this approach was sidelined during the pandemic. The Express Entry system allocates points to candidates based on factors such as age, language proficiency, and work experience. However, recent category-based selections have been criticized for being too narrow and not prioritizing economic goals.
