A European diplomatic delegation was ambushed by Israeli settlers near Ramallah in the occupied West Bank on Saturday, the Palestinian News and Information Agency (WAFA) reported.

The incident occurred in Area B, where Israel is responsible for security.

A European diplomat described the attack as unprovoked, stating that the delegation was merely picking olives when it was attacked. The diplomat expressed bewilderment at the assault, questioning why diplomats would be targeted while engaging in such a peaceful activity.

The Palestinian vice-president Hussein al-Sheikh condemned the attack.

According to al-Sheikh, the incident is a small-scale example of the daily terrorism faced by Palestinians. He stressed the need for a firm international stance to ensure protection for the Palestinian people.

The incident sparked a reaction from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office, which said that serious allegations require strong evidence.

However, the Israeli military condemned the attack and launched an investigation.

Israeli opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot criticized Netanyahu's government, accusing it of condoning Jewish terrorism in the West Bank.

Eisenkot warned that such attacks on foreigners posed a significant threat to Israel's international reputation and national security.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been a longstanding issue, with tensions between Israeli settlers and Palestinian communities in the West Bank frequently escalating into violence. The international community has repeatedly called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

The incident highlights the risks faced by diplomats and international observers in the region, underscoring the need for enhanced security measures to protect them.
