England's New Test Coach Fleming Eyes Revamp with Focus on Seamers
England's new Test coach Stephen Fleming aims to revamp team's strategy, emphasizing seamers over spinners due to changing pitch conditions.
England's Test cricket strategy is set for a shake-up under new coach Stephen Fleming, who takes the helm with a three-Test series against South Africa in December, This is a media release from the International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement.
Fleming's approach is influenced by the increasing trend of seamer-friendly pitches, which he believes has reduced the effectiveness of spinners.
The former New Zealand captain will begin his tenure on December 17 at the Wanderers in Johannesburg, marking the start of England's campaign in the ICC World Test Championship 2025/27 cycle.
Fleming noted that games are now typically decided within three-and-a-half to four days, with less deterioration in pitch conditions due to the use of drop-in wickets.
This shift has led to the rise of part-time spinners and the strategy of combining them with four seamers to form a strong attack.
England have historically performed well against South Africa at home, with their last series win in South Africa coming in 2019/20 under Joe Root's captaincy.
Fleming's priorities for England's coaching set-up include integrating county coaches and former players into the team.
He plans to stay connected to the domestic scene, having recently caught up with former teammates now coaching in England's county circuit.
England currently sit sixth in the ICC World Test Championship standings, having won just seven of their 16 Tests in the cycle.
The team's goal is to finish the cycle strongly under Fleming's guidance.
