The French parliament has rejected a crucial measure aimed at generating €3.7 billion in revenue for the social security system.

This development poses a significant challenge to the government's efforts to reduce its deficit. The proposed measure, part of the 2027 social security financing bill, sought to limit employer contribution relief for companies that pay profit-sharing or employee share ownership bonuses, Turkey's state-run news agency Anadolu Agency reported.

Lawmakers from President Emmanuel Macron's party and the right wing supported amendments that effectively removed this provision, citing concerns about its potential impact on businesses. The rejection of this measure has raised concerns about the financial implications, with Labor Minister Jean-Pierre Farandou warning that the consequences could be severe.

The government's goal is to reduce the social security deficit from €21.8 billion in 2026 to €12.7 billion in 2027. However, the rejection of this revenue-generating measure complicates this objective. Without this provision, lawmakers will not be able to proceed with examining the bill's spending provisions.

The debate surrounding this measure was marked by intense negotiations, with some lawmakers, like Socialist Jerome Guedj, accusing their colleagues of jeopardizing efforts to restore the system's finances. Green lawmaker Sandrine Rousseau even suggested the possibility of a no-confidence motion, criticizing opponents for abandoning previously agreed-upon compromises.

France's social security system plays a vital role in providing healthcare and financial support to its citizens. The system's financial struggles have been a longstanding concern, with the government facing challenges in balancing its budget while ensuring the system's sustainability. The rejection of this revenue measure adds to the complexity of this issue, highlighting the difficulties in achieving consensus on budgetary decisions.
