Karen Khachanov lost to Alexander Bublik in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Almaty Open tennis tournament.
Karen Khachanov, Russia's 5th-seeded tennis player, was defeated by Kazakhstan's 3rd-seeded Alexander Bublik in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Almaty Open tennis tournament on Friday. Khachanov, playing under a neutral status, lost the match 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5), Russia's state news agency TASS reported.
Bublik will now face Russia's top-ranked tennis player Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals. Medvedev had earlier defeated France's Terence Atmane in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
Khachanov, 30, is a seven-time ATP champion and currently ranked 25th in the world. His best Grand Slam performance was reaching the semifinals at the 2022 and 2026 US Open and the 2023 Australian Open. He also won a silver medal in men's singles at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo and the 2021 Davis Cup with the Russian national team.
The 2026 Almaty Open is an ATP 250 class tournament played on indoor hardcourts from October 19-25, offering $1.075 million in prize money. Medvedev is the tournament's reigning champion.
Following Russia's military operation in Ukraine, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended banning Russian and Belarusian athletes from international tournaments. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) subsequently suspended the membership of the Russian and Belarusian national tennis federations and canceled tournaments in both countries.
