New Zealand's Georgia Plimmer Shines in T20I Against Australia
Georgia Plimmer scores career-best 85 not out as New Zealand opens T20I series against Australia
New Zealand's Georgia Plimmer played a crucial innings in the opening T20I against Australia, scoring an unbeaten 85 off 68 balls to help her team post 2-162 at North Sydney Oval, Cricket Australia reported.
This was Plimmer's fourth half-century in the format and her highest score, surpassing her previous best of 63. She carried her bat throughout the innings, which was a significant boost to her team after the retirements of legends Suzie Bates, Sophie Devine, and Lea Tahuhu.
Plimmer said the New Zealand squad had discussed how to fill the gap left by the retirees and had pledged to take greater responsibility as a team. She added that it was not about one player trying to replicate another, but about the team coming together to step up in different areas.
Plimmer debuted for the White Ferns in 2022 and has been working to build her confidence and skills, crediting Bates for her support.
The White Ferns are looking to bounce back from a tough period, having failed to make the semi-finals of the 2025 ODI World Cup and the 2026 T20 World Cup. Plimmer said the team had learned from their mistakes and was looking to take positives from their fighting effort against Australia.
The series is tied at 1-1, with New Zealand needing to win the remaining matches to upset Australia and claim the Rose Bowl trophy.
New Zealand's captain, Amelia Kerr, is now the only player in the team with 'superstar' status, and Plimmer's performance could be a significant injection of confidence for the team. The White Ferns have a young team, and Plimmer's innings showed that they are capable of fighting against top-class opponents.
The Rose Bowl trophy is a coveted prize that Australia has held for 26 years, and New Zealand will be looking to claim it in the T20I series as well as the one-day matches.
