New South Wales ended day one in complete control of their Sheffield Shield match against Western Australia at the WACA Ground, posting 4-345. Kurtis Patterson scored a century, 117 not out off 209 balls, while Sam Konstas made 71 off 142, Lachlan Shaw scored 61 off 107, and Ollie Davies hit 52 off 58.

Patterson brought up his 16th first-class century late in the day when he fended Jhye Richardson through the off-side. This century comes at a crucial time for Patterson, who has only played two Tests for Australia, both in 2019 against Sri Lanka. His scores were 30 and 114 not out, averaging 144. Sam Konstas, 21, is also aiming to push his name back into the Test selection mix. He had an impressive Boxing Day Test debut against India in 2024 but hasn't played for Australia since July last year. Konstas averaged 33 from his 10 Shield matches last season. Western Australia had a two-wicket victory over Queensland in their opening match of the Shield season but struggled against NSW's powerful line-up on a batter-friendly deck, Cricket Australia said in a statement.

The Sheffield Shield is a domestic first-class cricket competition in Australia, featuring six teams from different states. It is a key tournament for players to showcase their skills and push for national team selection. The competition has a rich history, dating back to 1892-93, and has produced many legendary Australian cricketers.

NSW and WA are two of the most successful teams in the Sheffield Shield, with multiple titles between them. The match at the WACA Ground is crucial for both teams as they look to make a strong start to the season and gain momentum.
