Pakistan and China have begun their first joint military exercise, Karakoram 2026, in Korla, Xinjiang. The nine-day training programme focuses on counter-terrorism operations in high-altitude areas/

Troops from both countries are participating in specialised drills to improve operational coordination and respond to terrorist threats, the source.

The exercise includes training in unmanned aerial vehicle operations, searching for and engaging moving targets, long-range sniping, and live-force drills.

They have also exchanged counter-terrorism experience, and Pakistani troops observed Chinese weapons and military equipment, the source reported.

The exercise aims to deepen military cooperation and improve interoperability in counter-terrorism operations, China's Ministry of National Defense said. This is the first joint army exercise between the two countries in this format.

Pakistan and China have a long history of defence cooperation, including joint military drills, counter-terrorism training, and border security coordination. They have regularly conducted joint military exercises, such as the Warrior series of counter-terrorism drills.

In December 2025, they held Warrior-IX to improve interoperability and exchange experience in counter-terrorism operations.

Their military engagement continues, with a focus on counter-terrorism capabilities and coordination in challenging terrain. The two countries' defence cooperation is significant, given their shared border and strategic interests.

The joint exercise highlights the strong military ties between Pakistan and China, which have been strengthened through regular joint drills and cooperation.
