Pakistan and the Maldives aim to expand their bilateral relationship, focusing on trade, investment, and connectivity, Radio Pakistan, the state broadcaster, reported.

President Asif Ali Zardari met with his Maldivian counterpart, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, in Islamabad to review and strengthen their ties. They discussed ways to enhance cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including education, healthcare, and sustainable development.

The two leaders expressed satisfaction with the current state of their relations, which are rooted in shared faith, mutual trust, and respect for sovereignty. They noted that their sixty years of diplomatic relations have provided a strong foundation for their partnership.

Pakistan has historically contributed to the Maldives' development, including the construction of the Parliament building and the School of Medicine in Malé.

President Zardari reaffirmed his country's commitment to supporting the Maldives in various sectors.

Both leaders acknowledged the disproportionate impact of climate change on vulnerable countries, particularly small island nations.

They agreed to deepen cooperation in climate resilience, environmental protection, and sustainable development.

The meeting also touched on regional and international issues, with both leaders emphasizing the importance of dialogue, diplomacy, and peaceful dispute resolution.

They reaffirmed their support for the Palestinian people's legitimate rights and the establishment of an independent State of Palestine.

A state banquet was hosted in honor of President Muizzu and his delegation, attended by high-ranking Pakistani officials, including Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and the Chief of Army Staff.

Pakistan and the Maldives have enjoyed longstanding fraternal relations, and this recent meeting aims to further solidify their cooperation.

The Maldives, an archipelago of over 1,000 coral islands, is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change, with rising sea levels and extreme weather events posing significant threats to its existence.
