Punjab government mandates body cameras for hospital staff, sparking concerns

Punjab government requires hospital staff to wear body cameras, citing patient complaints, but medical professionals express concerns over privacy and practicality.

Pakistan - Dawn News Urdu

The Punjab government has mandated that medical staff wear body cameras during their shift, state-run APP reported Saturday.

The move was announced by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, citing public complaints about hospital behavior and negligence.

The decision has sparked concerns among medical professionals and officials.

The decision applies to doctors, nurses, ward boys, security guards, and pharmacy staff. However, medical professionals have expressed reservations, citing concerns over patient privacy and the practicality of the measure.

Pakistan Medical Association President Dr. Azhar Ahmad Choudhry said, "This is unbelievable. If implemented, it won't improve the healthcare system and will instead harm the government's reputation."

Dr. Choudhry added that the government did not consult with any individuals or forums before making the decision, which he termed as irrational and impractical.

"The government is creating conditions that put healthcare professionals' lives and existence at risk," he said.

Young Doctors Association Punjab President Dr. Shaeeb Niazi also expressed concerns, stating that the decision was made without consultation and would compromise patient privacy.

"It's a useless exercise. The government didn't consult us, and it will create problems," Dr. Niazi said.

The decision has raised questions about funding and implementation, with Dr. Niazi asking how the government would provide the cameras and who would bear the cost.

Medical professionals have pointed out that similar decisions, such as banning mobile phone use during duty, have not been effectively implemented in the past.
