Qatar Calls for Global Cooperation on Nuclear Disarmament at UN Meeting
Qatar stresses need for international action to eliminate nuclear weapons at 81st session of UN General Assembly's First Committee, Qatar's state news agency QNA reported.

Qatar has emphasized the need for concerted international efforts to achieve the complete elimination of nuclear weapons, Qatar News Agency (QNA) said in a statement.
This affirmation was made by Abdullah Nasser Al Kaabi, a member of Qatar's delegation to the 81st session of the UN General Assembly's First Committee. He highlighted that the development and threat of nuclear weapons, particularly their integration into military doctrines, exacerbates tensions and undermines international peace and security.
Al Kaabi stressed the importance of adhering to treaties like the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). Qatar supports the establishment of a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction, set to be discussed in November under Oman's presidency.
The 11th Review Conference of the NPT failed to reach a consensus on a final document. The UN Disarmament Commission also failed to reach consensus-based recommendations over three consecutive sessions.
Qatar maintains close ties with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and has served multiple terms as a member of the IAEA Board of Governors. The country has a partnership agreement with the IAEA valued at $600,000 to support technical cooperation projects in Syria.
Qatar welcomed the IAEA Board of Governors' decision to close the non-compliance file concerning Syria and remove it from the list of non-compliant states.
