Saad Al Otaibi, a Saudi Arabian candidate, was elected unopposed as President of the Arab Parliament during a procedural session at the Arab League General Secretariat in Cairo on Saturday, Qatar News Agency QNA reported on Saturday.
In a statement following his election, Al Otaibi emphasized that joint Arab action is crucial for strengthening Arab state security, safeguarding interests, and unifying positions.
He highlighted the importance of solidarity, cooperation, and coordinated efforts in addressing challenges facing the Arab world and enhancing Arab institutions' effectiveness.
Al Otaibi stated that the Palestinian cause remains the Arab Parliament's top priority, reaffirming support for the Palestinian people's legitimate rights, including the establishment of an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with international resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
He pledged continued diplomatic and parliamentary advocacy worldwide.
The Arab Parliament will hold preparatory meetings for the official opening of its new legislative session next Monday.
The Arab Parliament is a key institution in the Arab League, aiming to promote cooperation and coordination among Arab states.
It focuses on various issues, including economic development, social affairs, and political cooperation.
The Palestinian cause has long been a central concern for the Arab world, with many countries advocating for Palestinian statehood and rights.
The Arab Peace Initiative, launched in 2002, offers Israel normalization with Arab states in exchange for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
