The government is focusing on education reforms to improve the literacy rate, the state broadcaster Radio Pakistan reported, Senate Deputy Chairman Syedaal Khan Nasir said on Saturday.

Speaking at a ceremony in Islamabad, Nasir said national interests must come before political affiliations and differences to secure the country's progress and prosperity.

He said a shared vision, a coordinated strategy and practical measures were needed to promote education and raise literacy, which he described as the need of the hour.

Nasir stressed that effective cooperation between public and private educational institutions was crucial to reaching this national goal.

He said Pakistan's young people have considerable talent, competence and creative potential, and called for greater access to quality education and learning opportunities.

Since the 18th Amendment to the Constitution in 2010, education has been largely devolved to the provinces, which makes coordination between federal and provincial authorities a recurring theme in national reform efforts.

Pakistan has long struggled with a large number of children out of school and low adult literacy, challenges that successive governments have repeatedly identified as priorities.

The Senate is the upper house of Parliament, and its deputy chairman presides over sittings when the chairman is absent.

For families across the country, access to schooling and literacy shapes employment prospects and the nation's long-term economic growth.
