South Korea has renewed its offer to hold military talks with North Korea to discuss their conflicting views on the inter-Korean border, Qatar's state news agency QNA reported Friday.

The proposal aims to ease tensions sparked by a land mine blast inside the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) last month.

South Korea's Deputy Defense Minister Kim Hong-cheol said in a press briefing that different perceptions remain over the Military Demarcation Line (MDL), the border separating the two Koreas. He officially proposed holding inter-Korean military talks to jointly verify the locations of the land-based MDL, restore military communication lines, and discuss measures to prevent accidental clashes along the border.

Kim also suggested that trilateral dialogue involving the UN Command (UNC), which administers and enforces the Armistice Agreement governing the border area, can be considered.

The Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) is a buffer zone established in 1953 after the Korean War to separate North and South Korea. Despite its name, it is one of the most heavily militarized borders in the world. The area has seen numerous incidents and skirmishes over the years, and tensions between the two Koreas remain high.

The proposal for military talks comes as a significant development in the relations between the two Koreas, which have been strained in recent years. The talks, if agreed upon, could potentially help reduce tensions and prevent future incidents along the border.
