US Advises Citizens to Avoid Travel to Iraq Due to Security Risks
The US has warned its citizens against traveling to Iraq due to security risks including armed conflict, terrorism, and kidnapping.
The US has issued a travel warning advising its citizens to avoid traveling to Iraq for any reason, citing significant security concerns, Anadolu Agency, Turkey's state-run news agency reported on Saturday.
The warning, updated by the US State Department and published by the US Embassy in Iraq, highlights the risks of armed conflict, terrorism, and kidnapping. The US government's ability to provide emergency services to American citizens in Iraq is limited due to these security risks.
Iran-backed Houthis have launched attacks on Saudi Arabia, targeting civilian airports and critical infrastructure, resulting in civilian casualties and travel disruptions. The US warns that such hostilities can escalate rapidly.
The Iraqi government is unable to guarantee the safety of US citizens against sudden outbreaks of violence and armed conflict. US government personnel in Iraq are subject to strict security protocols and require special authorization to travel.
The warning also notes the risks of terrorism and kidnapping, with groups like ISIS and Iran-aligned armed groups encouraging and conducting attacks against US persons and interests. Recent attacks have targeted hotels, universities, energy infrastructure, airports, and diplomatic facilities.
The US Federal Aviation Administration has issued restrictions and warnings concerning flights in or near Iraqi airspace due to aviation safety risks.
The updated advisory comes amid rising regional tensions and reports of US-Israeli preparations for a potential large-scale attack on Iran.
