South Africa staged a remarkable fightback on Day 3 of their second ICC World Test Championship match against Australia, thanks to a career-best innings from skipper Temba Bavuma.

Reeling at 97/5, Bavuma stitched together 179 runs off 334 deliveries, an innings laced with 18 fours and a maximum, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement.

This was Bavuma's highest score in the longest format of the game, surpassing his previous best of 172 against the West Indies in 2023. Bavuma credited his childhood hero, Sachin Tendulkar, saying he tries to emulate his batting technique.

He also praised his ability to take his innings further and make it count. Marco Jansen (85) and Simon Harmer (82) accompanied Bavuma, stitching together crucial partnerships as the hosts declared their first innings at 425/9. Scott Boland was the pick of the Australian bowlers, registering a five-wicket haul.

South Africa's Kagiso Rabada made an impact with the ball, taking Nic Maddinson in his first over. Australia ended the day with three runs on the board for the loss of a wicket.

The match is part of the ICC World Test Championship, a prestigious international cricket competition. South Africa and Australia have a long history of competing against each other in cricket, with the two teams having played numerous matches over the years.

The first Test between the two teams was held from 9-13 October in Durban, which Australia won by 214 runs. The current match is crucial for both teams in terms of their standings in the championship.
