Hillary Clinton Opposes Term Limits for Elected Officials

Hillary Clinton rejects imposing term limits on elected officials, saying voters should decide how long they remain in office.

The debate over term limits for elected officials in the US has taken a new turn with Hillary Clinton's rejection of the idea. She believes voters should decide how long their representatives stay in office, not term limits, Anadolu Agency, Turkey's state-run news agency reported.

Clinton, the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, expressed her views in a conversation with journalist Kara Swisher.

She argued that term limits are artificial and that voters have the right to choose their representatives. If voters disagree with an official's performance, they can simply vote against them, she added.

The discussion around term limits for Congress comes as some argue it would bring about political renewal and reduce the power of incumbents.

On the other hand, opponents claim it would deny voters the chance to keep experienced representatives and might increase the influence of unelected staff and lobbyists.

Currently, members of the House of Representatives serve two-year terms, while senators serve six-year terms, with no limits on reelection.

Introducing term limits would require a constitutional amendment, which is a challenging process.

In the US, presidential term limits are set by the 22nd Amendment, allowing a president to serve a maximum of two elected terms.

Clinton has previously spoken out against mandatory retirement ages and term limits, emphasizing the importance of voters' choices.

The idea of term limits has sparked renewed debate in the US, with proponents arguing it would bring fresh perspectives to Congress and opponents warning it could undermine voters' rights.
