Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong jailed for 10 years over foreign collusion

Wong admitted conspiring with foreign forces, and the new term will run alongside the sentence he is already serving.

A Hong Kong court jailed pro-democracy campaigner Joshua Wong Chi-fung for 10 years on Thursday, Turkey's state-run news agency Anadolu Agency reported.

Wong entered a guilty plea in September to conspiring to collude with foreign forces, in a second case against him.

He is already serving a separate prison term for conspiracy to commit subversion, and the new sentence will run concurrently with it.

The court said the punishment was tied to Wong's part in an international campaign seeking sanctions against mainland China and Hong Kong after the 2019 anti-government protests, the South China Morning Post reported.

Wong was convicted of working with fugitive former lawmaker Nathan Law Kwun-chung and other activists to seek foreign intervention after Beijing imposed a national security law on Hong Kong on June 30, 2020.

The current prison term he is serving ends on Jan. 7, but because of the new sentence, Wong's expected release date has moved to late 2036, the newspaper reported.

Justice William Tam Yiu-ho ruled that Wong and his associates used their ties with senior overseas officials and institutions to encourage foreign interference through social media and major Western news agencies.

"The sanctions and hostile acts advocated by the activists could lead to highly detrimental and adverse consequences to Hong Kong and mainland China," Tam said.

Hong Kong experienced widespread anti-government protests in 2019, and Beijing introduced the national security law the following year to govern the semi-autonomous city.
