Independent candidate says Trump underestimated anger over Iran war

Sare linked Democratic gains in Congress to voter anger over the war and rising living costs, which she said the administration misjudged.

The Trump administration underestimated voter anger over the war against Iran, Independent presidential candidate Diane Sare said on Tuesday, Russia's state news agency TASS reported.

Sare attributed the Democrats' win of majorities in both houses of Congress mainly to anger at the Republicans, which she said the arrogant administration had greatly underestimated.

"The overwhelming majority of the American people oppose the Iran war," Sare said, adding that many voters were unhappy with the rising cost of living linked to the conflict.

Sare also said there is strong public opposition to continued US arms transfers to Israel, noting that most Americans believe Israel is committing war crimes and close to half believe it is committing genocide.

She called the war a major factor in the election results and said Trump's announced cut of $4 billion in aid to Israel had fooled no one, pointing to a US-Israel military and technology partnership in the National Defense Authorization Act, which has not yet passed.

Sare warned Democrats that they would face the same hostility by 2028 if they failed to change course significantly, and said she believed they would not do so.

She said independent and minor-party candidates, who are usually excluded from debates and get little airtime, became a swing factor in this race, and in some House and Senate contests received more than 30 percent of the vote without winning.

The midterm elections were held on Tuesday, when voters chose about one-third of the Senate, the entire House of Representatives and governors in 36 states and territories.

Republicans currently control both chambers of Congress, but Democrats will hold majorities in both the House and the Senate when the 120th Congress begins its work on Jan. 3, 2027.
