Iran's security chief says Trump suffered military and political defeats
Mohsen Rezaei said Americans are paying the financial cost of the war, as US Vice President JD Vance blamed the conflict for Republican midterm losses.
Tehran had handed US President Donald Trump defeats on the battlefield and in politics, Iran's top security official claimed on Wednesday, Turkey's state-run news agency Anadolu Agency reported.
Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, said in a post on X, the US social media platform, that Iranians had dealt Trump a strategic setback at sea and a political blow in Washington.
He added that Americans were bearing the financial burden of the war and warned that anyone who confronts Iran would pay a price, wherever the fighting reaches.
Rezaei's remarks followed comments by US Vice President JD Vance, who on Wednesday blamed the war with Iran for Republican losses in Tuesday's midterm elections.
Vance wrote on X that public anger over the conflict had pushed some former Trump supporters to back Democrats.
Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress in the elections.
The United States and Israel launched a war against Iran on Feb. 28, and a ceasefire was reached in April before fighting resumed in July as diplomatic efforts to end the conflict stalled.
The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway linking the Gulf with the Arabian Sea, and a large share of the world's seaborne oil passes through it.
Neither side's claims about the battlefield or the political fallout could be independently verified from the report.
