Northern Israeli city Karmiel orders checks on public shelters

The municipality said the city's security chief must confirm every shelter can be used in an emergency, as military instructions remain unchanged.

Israel's northern city of Karmiel ordered inspections of all public shelters on Tuesday amid media reports of possible fresh fighting with Iran, Turkey's state-run news agency Anadolu Agency reported.

The municipality said Mayor Moshe Koninski directed the city's security chief and security teams to examine every public shelter and confirm that the city could respond to an emergency.

The municipality added that guidance from the Israeli military's Home Front Command has not changed.

Israeli media had reported that the United States was getting ready for a possible new strike on Iran once the US midterm elections are over, with the two sides still at odds over the conditions for restarting negotiations.

The United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran on Feb. 28, the report said, and Tehran hit back at Israel and US assets in the region before a ceasefire took hold in April.

The report added that Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding in June on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, but its implementation has stalled over disagreements about security in the strait.

Karmiel is a city in northern Israel's Galilee region, and the Home Front Command is the military body that issues civil defence instructions to communities across the country.

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula that carries a large share of the world's seaborne oil, so any renewed hostilities there would be closely watched by energy markets.
