Ship reportedly struck by unknown projectile in Strait of Hormuz
The notice did not name the stricken ship or give details on casualties, damage or who fired the projectile.
A vessel was reportedly hit by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, the UK Maritime Trade Operations center said in a warning notice.
The agency said the master of a merchant ship had passed on a Mayday distress call, picked up on VHF Channel 16, reporting that another vessel had been struck.
The notice put the time of the incident at 1509 GMT on Nov. 1.
The center urged ships to move through the area carefully and to report any suspicious activity while investigations continue.
It did not identify the vessel that was reportedly hit, and it gave no information on casualties, damage or the source of the projectile.
Attacks on commercial tankers have been reported in the Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman during October, with some causing fires and damage to vessels, according to maritime security reports.
The strait is a key route for global oil and gas exports, and shipping security concerns have grown amid continuing tensions between the United States and Iran.
The US and Israel launched a war against Iran on Feb. 28, and a ceasefire was reached in April.
Fighting between the US and Iran resumed in July as diplomatic efforts to end the war stalled.
