Iran has classified the British Royal Navy and Royal Air Force as terrorist organizations and its intelligence agency MI6 as a hostile entity, Turkey's state-run news agency Anadolu Agency reported on Sunday.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry stated this decision was a response to the UK's earlier designation of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist group.

The ministry accused London of supporting the US and Israel's military actions against Iran, including providing access to its military bases.

Iran's Supreme National Security Council made this decision under a resolution, following the UK's designation of the IRGC under the State Threats Act 2026 on July 13.

Tensions in the Middle East have been high since the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28, prompting Iranian retaliation.

Despite diplomatic efforts and a June memorandum between Washington and Tehran, tensions persist over security and navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

Background

The relationship between Iran and the UK has been strained for years, with disagreements over Iran's nuclear program and its support for militant groups in the region.

The designation of the IRGC as a terrorist group by the UK has been a major point of contention, with Iran viewing it as an affront to its sovereignty.

Regional Implications

The escalating tensions in the Middle East have raised concerns about the potential for further conflict in the region, with the Strait of Hormuz being a critical waterway for global oil shipments.
