U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy was hospitalized after suffering a stroke on Saturday, his office said in a statement Sunday, Office of Sen. Chris Murphy said in a statement.

Chief of Staff Allison Herwitt said Murphy began experiencing numbness in his arm on Saturday afternoon while he was at his son's hockey game.

He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors found he had experienced a stroke, Herwitt said.

Murphy was then transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital for ongoing medical observation, and he is "responding well to treatment," Herwitt said.

Herwitt said physicians remain encouraged by his condition and confirmed that he is "awake and alert."

Her office said the senator's team remains optimistic about a full recovery.

Asked by reporters about the senator's medical condition, President Donald Trump expressed concern over the news.

"How bad is it? We don't like to hear a thing like that. He's a young guy," Trump told reporters.

Murphy, 53, has represented Connecticut in the U.S. Senate since 2013 and is a prominent member of the Democratic caucus.

A stroke occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted, and patients who suffer one are typically monitored closely in the hours and days that follow.

Johns Hopkins Hospital is a major medical center in Baltimore, Maryland.
