Nicola Carey welcomes baby son, then scores 62 for Hurricanes
Carey missed the Hurricanes' Saturday match against the Heat in Brisbane, with Heather Graham taking over as captain while she stays in Hobart.
Hurricanes captain Nicola Carey welcomed her first child on Wednesday and played one of the best all-round games of her career the same day, Cricket Australia said in a statement.
Carey and her partner, former Australia batter Elyse Villani, had a son, Louis James Villani-Carey, and Carey went from the hospital to Ninja Stadium for the match.
Carey smashed 62 off 43 balls and took two for 30 against the Renegades.
She nearly finished the day with a win after defending seven runs off the final over to force a Super Over, but a rare rule gave the Renegades the match after a line-ball call found wicketkeeper Lizelle Lee had taken the final ball in front of the stumps.
Hurricanes spinner Lauren Smith, speaking at Hobart Airport, said the club was thrilled for its current and former skippers.
"Wednesday was obviously a really big day for Nic," Smith said.
Heather Graham will captain the Hurricanes against the Heat in Brisbane on Saturday night, while Carey remains in Hobart.
The Hurricanes, who are 0-3 in their title defence, return home to face the Strikers on Nov. 10 and the Heat again on Nov. 14 at Ninja Stadium.
Carey, 33, said earlier in the season that the tournament's schedule had at times overwhelmed her, but she had known the due date and the fixture load when she accepted the captaincy.
She had not captained at this level before, but she was vice-captain last year and watched Villani lead the club during her four-year tenure.
Villani retired from the Women's Big Bash League at the end of last season, which led to Carey taking over the Hobart captaincy.
The Women's Big Bash League is Australia's professional women's Twenty20 competition, in which the Hurricanes are based in Hobart.
