Russian envoy says Zelensky has always opposed Trump's peace push
Kirill Dmitriev, who heads the Russian Direct Investment Fund, made the claim in a post on X after Zelensky welcomed the Democratic Party's midterm victory.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has always opposed US President Donald Trump's peace efforts, a Russian envoy claimed on Sunday, Russia's state news agency TASS reported.
Kirill Dmitriev, Russian President Vladimir Putin's special envoy for investment and economic cooperation with foreign countries, wrote on X that Zelensky has "always been and acted anti-Trump and anti-peace."
He added that Zelensky "just hid it better before," and said Trump's peace initiatives would succeed despite what he called warmongering resistance.
Dmitriev's post responded to Zelensky's statement after the US midterm elections, in which Zelensky celebrated the Democratic Party's victory and reaffirmed his opposition to Trump and a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine.
The United States held its midterm elections on Tuesday, choosing one-third of the Senate, the entire House of Representatives and governors in 36 states and territories.
Republicans currently control both chambers of Congress, but Democrats will hold majorities in both the House and the Senate when the 120th Congress begins its work on Jan. 3, 2027.
Moscow and Kyiv have not reached a peace agreement since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and Trump has made ending the war a stated goal of his foreign policy.
Dmitriev heads the Russian Direct Investment Fund, a state-backed fund that promotes foreign investment in Russia and works with overseas partners.
