The Sydney Sixers have won their first T20 Spring Challenge title, defeating the Perth Scorchers by 15 runs in Sydney. Erin Burns starred with 41 runs off 36 balls and three wickets, including 1-21, to lead her team to victory. The Sixers posted 8-149, with Lauren Kua and Caoimhe Bray scoring 24 off 20 each.
Spinner Lilly Mills took 3-19 to restrict the Sixers' batting line-up. In response, Katie Mack scored 23 from 16 and Mikayla Friday made 31 from 27, but the Scorchers were restricted to 7-134. Burns and Juliette Morton were crucial in the Sixers' win, taking 1-21 and 2-21 respectively, Cricket Australia said in a statement.
The title win will boost the Sixers' confidence ahead of their WBBL12 opening game against Brisbane Heat on October 30. The Spring Challenge is a domestic 20-over competition featuring eight Big Bash clubs and the ACT Meteors, serving as a warm-up for the WBBL.
Maddie Penna of the Strikers was named player of the tournament with 222 runs and seven wickets. Jemma Barsby of the Thunder took 11 wickets at 8.18.
The Sydney Sixers are the first team other than the Hurricanes to lift the Spring Challenge trophy. This was the third edition of the competition, which offers players a chance to secure their place on a Big Bash list. The Sixers' win was led by strong performances from their domestic players, including Burns, who said, "It's amazing to get out there and get some wins under our belt."
The Spring Challenge provides a platform for players to showcase their skills ahead of the Big Bash League and Women's Big Bash League. The competition features a mix of established and emerging players, providing an opportunity for teams to assess their squads and make adjustments before the start of the main season.
