President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he would accept the results of the US midterm elections and was ready to work with Democrats, Turkey's state-run news agency Anadolu Agency reported.

Trump made the remarks in a phone interview with the New York Times while he watched election returns at the White House, as Democrats appeared likely to win control of both chambers of Congress.

"I am absolutely willing to accept those results," Trump told the newspaper.

He said the two sides would work together and would probably reach some kind of agreement.

Republicans faced significant setbacks in several closely watched races, and Democratic gains could change the balance of power in Washington and complicate the president's legislative agenda for the rest of his term.

Trump blamed part of the Republican losses on his own absence from the ballot, arguing that the party's performance might have been different if he had been personally running.

The midterm elections take place about halfway through a presidential term and decide all 435 seats in the US House of Representatives and about a third of the Senate.

Control of Congress determines how much of a president's agenda can pass into law, so a change in either chamber can significantly affect a White House's policy goals.
