Turkey is ready to sign a maritime boundary delimitation agreement with Egypt based on mutual interests, Turkey's state-run news agency Anadolu Agency reported.
The potential deal could grant Egypt a larger maritime jurisdiction than an agreement with Greece, the Turkish National Defense Ministry said in a statement.
It added that Egypt would gain over 15,000 square kilometers of additional maritime jurisdiction with the agreement.
Turkey will continue protecting its legitimate rights and interests in the Eastern Mediterranean within the framework of international law, the ministry said.
The ministry also welcomed Libya's approval of a memorandum of understanding on maritime jurisdiction delimitation signed with Turkey in 2019.
Background
Turkey's relations with its neighbors in the Eastern Mediterranean have been a point of contention in recent years, particularly with Greece and Cyprus.
The country has been involved in several diplomatic efforts to establish its maritime boundaries and protect its interests in the region.
Regional Implications
The agreement with Egypt could have significant implications for the region, particularly in terms of maritime trade and security.
The Turkish Armed Forces continue to contribute to regional and global peace and security through various cooperation and training activities.
Upcoming Events
The Türkiye-Albania Naval Forces Cooperation Meeting is scheduled to take place in Turkey from November 2-5, and the Sea of Friendship-2026 Exercise will take place in Alexandria, Egypt, from November 4-9.
