Warsaw installs road barriers after deadly Krakow shooting

Warsaw's mayor said the city is placing barriers near a main tourist street and boosting patrols in crowded areas.

Warsaw is installing road barriers and concrete blocks near one of its main tourist streets after a shooting in Krakow on Saturday, Russia's state news agency TASS reported.

The street, Krakowskie Przedmiescie, is home to the official residence of Poland's president, and Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski said the work is underway there.

Trzaskowski said on the social media platform X that municipal services had begun placing barriers at entrances from streets next to the street, acting on a police recommendation.

Public transport will be rerouted for the time being, he said.

The municipal police and city on-duty services will keep a heightened watch over the Royal Route, the Old Town and other crowded areas, he added.

The shooting took place on Krakow's Main Market Square on Saturday.

A 24-year-old Polish national opened fire on pedestrians from a car with no license plates, killing six people and wounding fifteen.

Police later found the bodies of three more people in the suspect's apartment.

The Royal Route and Warsaw's Old Town draw large numbers of visitors, which is why the city is focusing its vigilance on those areas.

Road barriers and concrete blocks are a common way for cities to restrict vehicle access to crowded pedestrian zones.
