Australia is optimistic that Steve Smith will be fit to bat on the final day of the second Test against South Africa in Gqeberha, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said.

Smith missed his team's second innings on the fourth day due to neck stiffness, but coach Andrew McDonald expects him to be available on the fifth day.

Smith had top-scored for Australia in the first innings with 28 runs, surpassing 11,000 runs in Test cricket.

However, he looked uncomfortable after a delivery from Kagiso Rabada jolted his neck backwards. Despite this, McDonald said that Smith will bat on the final day, adding that the physio has been working on him.

Australia's current score is 156/4, with Travis Head (87*) and Scott Boland (2*) not out overnight.

The team is trying to salvage a draw after being forced to follow on, having been skittled for 99 in their first innings. McDonald expressed confidence in his team's ability to turn the game around, saying they have a strong batting unit.

The second Test is part of the ICC World Test Championship, and Australia is currently leading the series 1-0. The first Test was held in Durban from October 9-13, with Australia winning by 214 runs.

Australia's performance in the World Test Championship has been strong, with the team currently at the top of the standings.

However, South Africa is a formidable opponent, and the second Test is crucial for both teams.

The series will conclude with the third Test in Cape Town, and McDonald said that his team is prepared to reload and go again if needed.
