Australia Weighs Top-Order Changes as Smith's Neck Issue Complicates Selection
Australia considers multiple changes for the third Test against South Africa due to Steve Smith's neck issue and other top-order concerns, Cricket Australia reported.
Australia's top-order batting lineup is under scrutiny as Steve Smith's neck issue complicates selection for the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town, Cricket Australia said in a statement.
Smith's restricted preparation due to a neck twinge that flared up during the second Test has limited him to gentle throwdowns in the nets, raising concerns about his readiness for the match.
The 36-year-old was limited to around 15 minutes of throwdowns from Michael Di Venuto, with Australia's physiotherapist managing the session to mitigate the risk of further injury.
Wicketkeeper Alex Carey expressed optimism about Smith's prospects, saying, "Looking forward to seeing Steve get out there and hopefully score the big runs we've seen him do (in the past)."
Smith has failed to pass 30 in the series and his restricted preparation may impact Australia's chances against the format's reigning champions.
The neck issue has also brought Marnus Labuschagne's spot under consideration, with Josh Inglis, Cameron Green, and others facing the main bowlers in a practice session.
A call on Labuschagne and Scott Boland, who has made a strong case for selection with his bowling and batting, are two pivotal decisions for selectors.
Boland's inclusion may necessitate leaving out one of captain Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, or Josh Hazlewood, making for a difficult call.
Australia have overlooked a frontline slow bowler in five of their last 10 Tests, with mixed results.
Carey noted that the team has historically performed well without a spinner, but also acknowledged the benefits of having one.
The third Test against South Africa begins on October 27 at Newlands in Cape Town.
All matches are being broadcast exclusively in Australia on Kayo and Fox Cricket.
The second Test ended with South Africa winning by an innings and 31 runs.
