Libya's National Oil Corporation has inaugurated the Al-Rashad natural gas field with a production capacity of 50 million cubic feet per day, Qatar's state news agency QNA reported, Qatar News Agency (QNA) said in a statement.

The field, located south of Brega in northeast Libya, marks a significant addition to the country's oil and gas sector, bolstering gas supplies and helping meet the needs of power plants and industrial sectors, the NOC said in a statement.

NOC Chairman Masoud Suleman called for ramping up efforts to sustain production and increase oil revenues amid the challenges facing the sector.

Libya is currently grappling with a shortfall in gas supplies relative to domestic demand, with the bulk of consumption concentrated in electricity generation.

Background Libya's oil and gas sector has faced significant challenges in recent years due to the country's ongoing political instability and conflict. The sector is a crucial component of Libya's economy, with oil and gas exports generating the majority of the country's revenue.

The Al-Rashad gas field is one of several projects aimed at increasing Libya's oil and gas production and meeting the country's growing energy demands.

The field's production capacity will help alleviate some of the pressure on Libya's power plants and industrial sectors, which have been affected by the gas shortage.
