Chinese prosecutors have charged former Politburo member Ma Xingrui with bribery on Thursday, Anadolu Agency reported.

The Supreme People's Procuratorate, which had earlier ordered Ma's arrest, filed the indictment against the 67-year-old on accusations of accepting bribes.

Prosecutors allege that Ma illegally took large sums of money and valuables in exchange for helping others obtain benefits.

The indictment says he used the influence of a series of his earlier posts, drawing on the power those roles gave him.

The case has been transferred to the People's Procuratorate of Yichang in Hubei province, in central China, state media reported.

Ma joined the Politburo in 2022 and was among 33 officials the ruling Communist Party removed last month.

Before that, he served as deputy head of the Leading Group for Rural Affairs under the party's Central Committee.

The party announced an investigation into Ma in July, several months before the indictment was issued.

The Politburo is the party's top decision-making body, and its members rank among the most senior officials in the country.

Under Xi Jinping, who has led the party since 2012, an anti-corruption drive has resulted in probes into and the removal of many senior officials.

In China's system, procuratorates decide whether to bring criminal cases to court, and courts then determine guilt and sentencing.
