Five people were killed and 15 others wounded on Tuesday in an attack on a health centre in Yemen's Lahj governorate, the Ministry of Public Health and Population said in a statement carried by the Saba news agency of Yemen's internationally recognised government.

The ministry said the attack on al-Suqia Health Center in al-Madharbah District was carried out by what it called Iranian-backed Houthi terrorist militias.

Among the dead were three medical staff members working at the centre, the ministry said, while seven members of the medical team were among the injured.

The ministry condemned the attack as a heinous crime and said it violated international humanitarian law and national laws that protect health facilities, their workers, patients and visitors.

It said targeting healthcare facilities is a serious crime and a blatant breach of the principle that medical establishments should stay out of armed conflicts.

The ministry described the attack as a direct assault on civilians, a claim that has not been independently verified in the source material.

Yemen has been torn by conflict since the Houthi movement seized the capital Sanaa and much of the north in 2014, prompting a military intervention by a Saudi-led coalition in 2015.

The fighting has repeatedly hit civilian infrastructure, and the United Nations has long warned that Yemen's health system is badly strained, with many facilities damaged or short of staff and supplies.
