Pakatan Harapan component parties must respect the coalition's decision to allocate the Bemban state seat to a Bersatu candidate in the Melaka state election, PH election director Amirudin Shari said, Malaysia's national news agency Bernama reported Tuesday.

Amirudin, who is also Selangor Menteri Besar, emphasized that party members must abide by the consensus reached by the coalition and its leadership regarding electoral pacts and seat allocations.

He stated that PH maintains an open approach to discussions, considering every possibility in determining the direction of its political partnerships, adding that all party members should respect the coalition's collective choice.

This comes after former Melaka DAP chairman Damian Yeo expressed willingness to quit politics rather than support PH's move to hand over the Bemban seat to a Bersatu candidate, citing past political betrayals.

Amirudin also said that any decision to extend electoral pacts with Bersatu to the Sarawak state election or the 16th General Election has not been finalised, and that PH will assess the outcome of the Melaka state election before making any decisions.

Additionally, Amirudin mentioned that no decision has been reached on political ties between PH and Bersatu in Selangor, pending further deliberations.

Pakatan Harapan is a Malaysian coalition of political parties that has been in power since 2018, with its component parties including PKR, DAP, and Bersatu.

The coalition's decision to allocate the Bemban seat to Bersatu is seen as a strategic move to strengthen its presence in Melaka, a state that has been a stronghold of opposition parties in the past.

The Melaka state election is a significant event in Malaysian politics, with the outcome potentially impacting the country's overall political landscape.
