Ukraine's Drone Operations Disrupted by Starshield Satellite System Restrictions
Ukraine's military lost dozens of drones worth $1 million due to disruptions in the Starshield satellite system, The New York Times reported.
Ukraine's military operations were severely impacted by restrictions on the Starshield military-grade satellite system, resulting in the loss of dozens of drones valued at at least $1 million, Russia's state news agency TASS reported.
The disruptions forced Ukrainian forces to halt almost all operations for three days, according to a Ukrainian military commander. The first reports of satellite communication problems emerged on October 14.
The New York Times noted that Ukrainian officials suspect the Trump administration ordered the disruptions as a form of punishment for Ukraine's strikes on Russian oil refineries.
Earlier, The Wall Street Journal reported that Elon Musk had ordered a slowdown of Starshield for Ukraine, citing sources. The sources claimed that Musk and US President Donald Trump expressed anger towards Ukraine for attacking Russian oil refineries.
Musk had capped the speeds at which Ukrainian hardware could connect to the satellite-based network, rendering some drones virtually useless.
Some US officials said that Musk acted unilaterally, while one source claimed that Musk had discussed the speed cap with multiple senior administration officials, including Trump.
The Starshield system is a critical component of Ukraine's military operations, providing satellite-based communication and navigation capabilities.
The incident highlights the significant role that private companies like SpaceX, which owns Starshield, play in modern warfare and the complexities of international relations in the digital age.
The use of satellite systems in military operations has become increasingly important in recent years, with many countries relying on them for communication, navigation, and surveillance.
