A US Marine died after a military training incident on Okinawa, Japan, on Tuesday, the 3rd Marine Division said in a statement.

The division extended its deepest sympathies to the Marine's family and loved ones and confirmed that an inquiry into the death has begun.

The death occurred at Marine Corps Camp Schwab in northern Okinawa, which hosts most of the roughly 50,000 American troops deployed in Japan under a mutual defense treaty.

Officials are withholding the Marine's name until 24 hours after the next of kin have been notified, in line with Pentagon policy.

The 3rd Marine Division oversees several units across Okinawa, including the 12th Marine Littoral Regiment, the 4th Marine Regiment, the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion and Headquarters Battalion.

The division has not disclosed the specific nature of the training exercise in which the incident took place.

US news outlet Stars and Stripes first reported the death on Wednesday, citing the division.

Okinawa, a southern island prefecture, hosts a large share of the US military facilities in Japan, and local residents have long raised concerns about the impact of the bases on daily life.

Military training accidents on the island have repeatedly drawn scrutiny from local officials and residents, though the circumstances of each case differ.
