US Military Bases to Operate Independently for 90 Days in Major Conflict
The Pentagon plans for US military bases to operate independently for 90 days during a major war, securing essential services and supplies.
The US Pentagon is making plans for its military bases to function on their own for at least 90 days in the event of a major conflict, securing vital services and supplies against disruptions to civilian infrastructure and global supply chains, Turkey's state-run news agency Anadolu Agency reported Sunday.
The initiative, known as FORTRESS, involves preparing military bases with portable nuclear reactors, large-scale battery storage, and microgrids to maintain operations during power outages.
The Pentagon also aims to stockpile strategic reserves of munitions, fuel, critical minerals, electronics, spare parts, and medical supplies.
Pentagon chief spokesperson Sean Parnell said the US homeland defense planning must adapt to threats that could reach the American mainland.
Parnell said, "Power is combat now. Without electricity, you lose communications, water, logistics, assembly lines and just basic military command structures."
The FORTRESS initiative also seeks to protect military communications, navigation, and satellite capabilities against interference.
The Pentagon is also working to prepare civilian factories to switch to defense production through the Civil Reserve Manufacturing Network.
The US military's plan to operate independently for an extended period highlights the country's concerns about potential disruptions to global supply chains and civilian infrastructure during a major conflict.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance the country's national security and defense capabilities in the face of emerging threats.
The US has been investing in its military infrastructure and capabilities in recent years, with a focus on preparing for potential conflicts with near-peer adversaries.
The country's military strategy has shifted towards a more expeditionary and sustainable approach, with a focus on operating in a range of environments and scenarios.
