A protest was held in Berlin by members of the Yemeni community, calling for international pressure on the Houthi militia to lift the siege on Taiz and reopen roads, the news agency of Yemen's internationally recognised government Saba (Government) reported on Monday.

The protesters demanded an end to Houthi attacks on various governorates, protection for civilians and public facilities, and the designation of the militia as a terrorist organization, they said.

The protesters also warned that Houthi threats to international shipping in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait posed a risk to regional security, global trade, and energy supplies, according to the protesters.

The participants expressed solidarity with Taiz residents, praising their resilience and sacrifices in defending the republic, and called for the restoration of state institutions and an end to Houthi abuses, the protesters said.

Background

The conflict in Yemen has been ongoing since 2015, with the Houthi militia controlling large parts of the country, including the capital Sana'a, and the internationally recognized government controlling smaller areas.

The siege on Taiz has been in place for several years, with the Houthi militia controlling access to the city and restricting the movement of people and goods, leading to a severe humanitarian crisis.
