Western Australia took control on day one of their Sheffield Shield match against South Australia, with Cameron Bancroft and Jayden Goodwin forging a 244-run partnership for the second wicket at the Adelaide Oval, Cricket Australia reported on Wednesday.

Bancroft, 33, led Western Australia to a strong position of 3-304 at stumps, remaining unbeaten on 156 runs.

This marks his first century of the season and his 21st in the Sheffield Shield, achieved in 289 balls with 17 fours and a six.

Goodwin, batting at number three, scored 108 runs in a 222-ball innings, hitting 13 boundaries before being bowled by Brendan Doggett.

The duo's partnership is the fifth-highest second-wicket stand in Western Australia's Shield history.

Western Australia's captain, Hilton Cartwright, won the toss and chose to bat, with the team's openers, Sam Whiteman and Bancroft, getting underway.

Whiteman was caught by Mackenzie Harvey at first slip for one run off Nathan McAndrew's bowling.

Cartwright made 27 runs before being caught behind off Wes Agar's bowling in the final over of the day.

Nightwatcher Corey Rocchiccioli defended the last five deliveries of the day against Agar.

Background

The Sheffield Shield is a premier domestic first-class cricket competition in Australia, featuring six teams from different states.

Western Australia's strong performance comes ahead of a crucial Test series for Australia against South Africa, with Bancroft's form being closely watched after his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal in 2018.

Context

Bancroft's return to form is significant, especially with Australian opener Steve Smith currently sidelined with a neck injury.

The Adelaide Oval is known for its batting-friendly pitch, which Goodwin acknowledged, saying, "Adelaide Oval is one of the best places to bat for sure," adding that their different batting styles made it challenging for the bowlers.

The match continues on day two, with South Australia aiming to restrict Western Australia's lead and mount a comeback.
