Flash floods collapse bridge in eastern Syria, killing one

Floodwaters have also hit homes and power lines in Deir ez-Zor, Latakia and Aleppo, with rescue teams still assessing the damage.

Flash floods swept away a bridge in eastern Syria on Saturday, killing at least one person and cutting off residents from the other side, Turkey's state-run news agency Anadolu Agency reported.

The Al-Suwayiyah bridge sits east of Al-Bukamal in Deir ez-Zor province, on the road that links the town to the Iraqi border.

Once it fell, people on each side could no longer get across.

Hisham Matar, head of civil defense in Al-Bukamal, told Anadolu that the water covered many homes and roads.

The flooding also damaged the power network, leaving parts of the area without electricity.

Rescue crews are working around the clock, Matar said, while they assess the damage and track water levels.

Mohammed Bdewi said his brother, Hussein, was on the bridge when it gave way, as he drove back from taking his sister to her village.

Bdewi said neglect was partly to blame and called on the authorities to build a permanent replacement rather than depend on temporary fixes.

Heavy rain has caused flooding in several Syrian provinces in recent days, including Deir ez-Zor, Latakia and Aleppo.

In Latakia's Bayirbucak area, floodwaters also brought down a bridge that linked villages on either side of the Al-Kabir al-Shamali River.

Provincial authorities said repair work has started.

Floodwaters also spread across farmland and homes in Afrin, north of Aleppo.

Earlier, in late October, heavy rain killed seven civilians, five of them children, in rural areas of Raqqa, Deir ez-Zor and Aleppo, the Emergency and Disaster Management Ministry said.
