Israeli forces fire artillery shells near Damascus village

Israeli artillery shells landed on farmland near Beit Jinn, a day after Israeli forces shelled areas in central Quneitra, a Syrian broadcaster reported.

Israeli forces fired two artillery shells on the edge of a village southwest of Damascus on Thursday, Syrian broadcaster Alikhbariah TV reported via Turkey's state-run news agency Anadolu Agency.

An Alikhbariah correspondent said the shells fell on farmland on the outskirts of Beit Jinn.

The broadcaster also reported that Israeli forces fired three artillery shells on Wednesday near the Al-Mantara Dam area in central Quneitra.

The report did not mention any casualties or damage from the strikes on either day.

The Golan Heights, a plateau that Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 Middle East war, has been under Israeli control since then, and Israel annexed it in 1981, a move most of the international community does not recognize.

Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in December 2024, Israel has widened its military presence in the buffer zone between Syria and the Golan Heights and pushed into parts of southern Syria.

The two sides operate under a 1974 Separation of Forces Agreement, which was reached after the 1973 war and set up the buffer zone that Israeli troops have since moved into.

Damascus has repeatedly demanded that Israeli forces withdraw from Syrian territory, saying the incursions violate the country's sovereignty and the disengagement agreement.
