The UAE National Guard rescued 22 people after a fire broke out on board a cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman on Sunday, the force said in a statement.

The rescued people were Arab nationals, the National Guard said in a statement posted on the social media platform X.

They received first aid before being handed over to the relevant authorities, the force said.

All 22 were in stable condition, the National Guard added.

The rescue took place amid ongoing tensions over navigation in the nearby Strait of Hormuz, Anadolu Agency reported.

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman that links the Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the wider Arabian Sea.

A large share of the world's seaborne oil passes through the strait, which is why shipping in the area is closely watched.

Tensions over the waterway have risen since the United States and Israel began an offensive against Iran in late February.

The Gulf of Oman lies between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran's southern coast, and ships crossing it often pass near the strait.

The UAE National Guard is a reserve force of the United Arab Emirates, which borders the Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
