Glenn Maxwell retires from T20 internationals and List A cricket
The 38-year-old finished with 130 T20 internationals and three World Cups to his name, and will continue with Melbourne Stars.
Glenn Maxwell retired from T20 International cricket on Tuesday, ending a 13-year career in the format, Cricket Australia said in a statement.
The 38-year-old played 130 T20 internationals, and his last came at the T20 World Cup earlier this year, where Australia's campaign ended in disappointment.
Maxwell, who retired from one-day international cricket in June last year, said he had several discussions with the team before and after the World Cup.
He said there was no pressure from team management and that the two sides agreed to leave the door open, as Australia looked to the future.
He pointed to the recent tour of Bangladesh, where younger players were given chances and performed well.
Maxwell leaves the format as Australia's third-highest T20I run scorer with 2,897 runs, behind David Warner and Aaron Finch.
He is one of two batters, alongside India's Rohit Sharma, to have scored five T20I centuries.
His first of those came in Pallekele, where he opened the batting and made 145 not out from 65 balls with nine sixes.
The other four came from number four between 2018 and 2024, a period when he was among Australia's most consistently destructive batters in the format.
He also hit the winning runs in Australia's 2021 T20 World Cup triumph.
Maxwell has also retired from List A cricket, and he last played for Victoria in one-day matches, having not appeared in a first-class match since 2023.
Speaking on the Final Word podcast, he said telling his Victoria team-mates it was his final game for the state was "probably harder than I thought it was going to be."
He said he got emotional in front of the group, which had supported him throughout his career.
Maxwell said he needs to spend more time looking after his body to get through the few tournaments left in his career.
He will continue his search for a first Big Bash League title with Melbourne Stars, with whom he is contracted until the end of the 2027-28 season.
He said he will manage his knee so he is ready for the BBL, when the Stars open their campaign against Adelaide on Dec. 18 at the MCG.
