Jersey and Kuwait advance to 2027 World Cup qualifier play-off

Kuwait will play their first-ever One Day Internationals at the eight-team play-off later this year.

Jersey and Kuwait secured top-two finishes in their Challenge League A group on Tuesday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement.

Jersey finished top of the group after completing a 15-match campaign in Kenya, losing only two matches and finishing five points ahead of Kuwait.

Kuwait had to wait longer to confirm second place, but a strong finish to the campaign and dropped points by the chasing teams secured their position.

Kuwait finished seven points ahead of Denmark, which lost to Kenya and Papua New Guinea in the final leg.

Both teams now move on to the Cricket World Cup Qualifier Play-off later this year, an eight-team tournament, the ICC said.

The play-off includes the top two teams from Challenge League B, Italy and Uganda, and the bottom four finishers from Cricket World Cup League 2, the competition above Challenge League A on the 50-over pyramid.

The tournament will decide the final four places in the Cricket World Cup Qualifier and carries One Day International status, so Kuwait will play their first-ever ODIs there.

Jersey played five ODIs in the equivalent competition in the last cycle in 2023, winning one match against Papua New Guinea.

Canada, Nepal and the United Arab Emirates finished in the bottom four of League 2 and will also take part in the play-off.

Oman, currently fourth, is the only team that could still be overtaken by Namibia, which sits fifth, and the League 2 cycle ends on Wednesday.

USA, Scotland and the Netherlands have already secured top-four finishes in League 2 and will automatically progress to the Cricket World Cup Qualifier.
