Malaysia to Complete Disaster Risk Reduction Act Study Within 12 Months
Malaysia's National Disaster Management Agency will complete a study on the proposed Disaster Risk Reduction Act within 12 months, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.
Malaysia's National Disaster Management Agency will complete a study on the proposed Disaster Risk Reduction Act within 12 months, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said, Bernama reported.
The study's findings and recommendations will be reviewed and coordinated with relevant ministries and agencies before the proposed policy and legislation are finalised.
A specific timeline for the tabling of the National Disaster Management Bill in the Dewan Rakyat has yet to be determined, Ahmad Zahid said in a written reply published on the Parliament website.
The Deputy Prime Minister, who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister, said the study's findings will serve as an important basis for determining the direction of efforts to strengthen the country's disaster governance.
The government is taking a comprehensive approach to ensure the proposed legislation is suited to the country's disaster management needs, rather than simply enacting a new law without identifying gaps in the existing framework.
The approach emphasises science-, data- and technology-based preparedness, early action, early warning systems, clear command structures, and rapid and coordinated responses.
