Malaysia's Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, announced that policy recommendations for the Political Financing Bill will be submitted to the Special Select Committee soon.

The Malaysian government will soon present policy recommendations for the Political Financing Bill to the Special Select Committee, Malaysia's national news agency Bernama reported.

The recommendations, prepared by the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister's Department, cover the scope of the law, sources and limits of contributions, mechanisms for receiving funds, reporting, auditing, transparency, offences, and penalties.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, said the recommendations were based on research findings, engagement sessions, and a triangulation process conducted during the Political Financing Convention 2026.

The convention, organised in collaboration with the International Islamic University Malaysia and the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs, aimed to present research findings and gather views from stakeholders.

Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said also addressed concerns that political donors might face tax audits, licence reviews, or scrutiny of government contracts, stating that legitimate donors should not face retaliation or unfair treatment.

However, she noted that if there are legitimate grounds, such as tax non-compliance or breaches of licensing conditions, appropriate action may still be taken in accordance with the laws in force.

The Minister emphasised the need for a clear separation between lawful political contributions and the government's functions in carrying out audits, regulation, enforcement, and procurement.

Proposals to make periodic reporting, audits, and public disclosure of information mandatory, alongside the establishment of appropriate offences and penalties, could help ensure that all parties are subject to the same rules and held accountable in the event of any violations.

The Political Financing Bill aims to increase transparency and accountability in political financing, and the government has taken steps to ensure that the bill is drafted with input from various stakeholders.

Malaysia has been working to strengthen its anti-corruption laws and institutions, and the introduction of the Political Financing Bill is part of these efforts to promote good governance and transparency in the country's political landscape.
