Musk says running Grok chatbot has become too costly for its revenue

Musk did not give figures on costs or revenue, and did not say whether the weekly usage limits would change.

The expense of running xAI's Grok chatbot has grown too high for the income it brings in, Elon Musk said on Sunday, Turkey's state-run news agency Anadolu Agency reported.

Writing on the US social media platform X, Musk said that serving Grok Bot costs more than the service earns, replying to a user who had asked whether xAI could reset the weekly usage allowance.

The user said many subscribers had used up their Grok Bot allowance much faster than usual during the week.

Musk gave no figures on operating costs or revenue, and he did not say whether usage limits would be changed or reset.

xAI launched Grok Bot in early beta in August as an AI agent that can carry out tasks across apps and online services using its own virtual computer.

Unlike a standard chatbot, the service can perform multi-step tasks and keep working in the background.

Grok Bot is offered through several paid SuperGrok and Cursor subscription plans, and its usage is counted separately from users' other Grok and Cursor allowances.

xAI is the artificial intelligence company founded by Musk, and Grok is its chatbot, which is closely linked to X.

AI agents that run long, multi-step tasks generally require far more computing power than simple chat queries, a cost pressure many AI companies face as demand grows.
